Light in the winter darkness

When December darkness descends upon the island and the wind whistles around the corners, a quiet light spreads throughout Rörö. One of the most beloved traditions is when the school children perform Lucia – not in church or on stage, but in the midst of everyday life.

Early in the morning, the children gather, dressed in white robes, glitter and candles. Then they carefully parade through the shop, singing well-known Lucia songs among the shelves and goods. Customers and staff pause, and for a moment everything becomes still. The smell of coffee and oranges fills the air, and in the midst of the winter rush, the children’s voices spread warmth and light.

For many people on Rörö, this Lucia celebration is a cherished tradition – simple, but full of meaning. It reminds us of the community spirit on the island, the joy in small things and how light always finds its way, even during the darkest days of the year.
