The heart of summer
When summer is in full bloom, Midsummer is celebrated with dancing, music and joy. The meadows are ablaze with flowers, and the scent of lilacs and clover wafts on the warm summer breeze.
Midsummer on Rörö is a celebration for young and old alike. The guest harbour is full, and there is a buzz of activity on the jetties, in the queue for ice cream and on the bench. Many who have moved away from the island return home to celebrate with family and friends. It is a time of community, tradition and gratitude – a celebration of life by the sea and of all the greenery that sprouts.
On Midsummer’s Eve, Rörö wakes up early. At around ten o’clock in the morning, Rörö IF gathers both islanders and visitors in the park to watch a small caravan of quad bikes roll through the village to collect aspen leaves, flowers and greenery. The laughter of children sitting on the trailers spreads along the road. When all the greenery is in place, everyone gathers again in the park to decorate the maypole together.
When the pole is decorated and erected, everyone goes home for a while to have lunch with family and friends – herring, new potatoes and strawberries for dessert are traditional. Then everyone gathers again in the park at around three o’clock, where the celebrations continue with dancing around the pole, games, lotteries and joyful laughter that can be heard far across the island.
For the people of Rörö, Midsummer means more than just dancing and singing. It is a tradition that brings generations together and reminds us that summer is truly here. Many who grew up on the island return on this day – to meet, reminisce and create new stories together.
Floral dresses, flower crowns and summery shirts are everywhere, and picnic blankets are spread out on the grass. The aroma of coffee, strawberries and freshly grilled food mixes with the salty sea air. When evening comes, the sun lingers over the cliffs, and the light lingers over meadows and jetties. It’s Midsummer on Rörö – a day when everything feels a little closer, a little simpler, and life a little brighter than usual.
